Gene's death occurred Thursday morning March 6, 1997 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was sixty-eight years old. Gene was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner, the church's financial board, Father John Hogan-Knightts of Columbus Council #10669, Thomas E. Woods American Legion Post #223 in Sumner, and the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department for fifteen years.
Gene is survived by his wife, Donna of Sumner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Betty Erhardt of Denver, Iowa; and Jeff and Karen Erhardt of Waverly; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dennis Harmening of Humboldt, Iowa; two grandsons, Daron and Brian Harmening; two granddaughters, Teal and Natalie Erhardt, one bother, Virgil of Sumner, Iowa; and two sisters, Donna Niedert of Denver, Iowa and Carol Everding of Denver, Iowa.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Andy Erhardt on July 3, 1983.
