Abilene, Tx. - Kermit Dan Rutledge, 73, died Monday, September 3, 2012 at his home after a brief battle with cancer. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 5th at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel with Larry Gill and Lou David Allen officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.

Kermit was born December 17, 1938 in Merkel to Daniel Tillman "Pete" and Velma (Baker) Rutledge. After graduating from Merkel High School in 1957, he went on to Abilene Christian College on a football scholarship. A knee injury ended his football career, and he was drafted into the 8th U.S. Army Corps, which he served in from November 1961 to September 1963, which included a stint in Seoul, Korea. After the Army, Kermit moved to Odessa, where he worked as a purchasing agent for Baker Tool. After many years there, he returned home and worked at West Texas Medical Center, now Abilene Regional Medical Center, as a purchasing agent until his retirement.

Kermit's hobbies included woodworking, genealogy, and sports. His furniture and household items showed off his artistic side. His attention to detail was evident in the research that he completed for his family tree, following it back many generations so that future generations would know their roots.

Kermit was one of the first to be inducted into the Merkel High School Hall of Fame in 1976 for his accomplishments in football. He continued to stay fit throughout the years by playing tennis, riding his bicycle, and walking. He had a love for all sporting events, especially those in which family members were involved.

Survivors include three sisters, Billie Moore and husband Boyd of Fredericksburg, Donna Riney and husband David of Merkel, Linda Rutledge of Merkel; brother, Errol Rutledge and wife Ann of Abilene; two half-brothers, Tillman Rutledge of San Antonio and Waymon Rutledge and wife Winnie of Valencia, CA; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Kermit was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Lloyd Rutledge.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Anton Melnyk, Dr. George Dawson, and Hospice of the Big Country. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, TX 79605 or Adult Protective Services Partners, P. O. Box 521, Abilene, TX 79605.
