John W. Adam, 83, of Syracuse, died Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at Community General Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Adam was born in Sharon, Connecticut and graduated from high school in Chatham, NY. He moved to the Syracuse area to attend Syracuse University under the GI Bill after serving in the U.S. Air Corps' 8th Air Force, 379th Bomber Group in Kimbolton, England from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Adam received B.S. and M.S. degrees at SU and taught physical education in the North Syracuse Central School District until his retirement in 1983. He also worked for the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department as supervisor of neighborhood activities for many years. Mr. Adam was an avid gardener and builder of stone walls. He enjoyed trout fishing and antique collecting and was well-read in American history and the history of ancient civilizations. He enjoyed sports and followed teams from local to professional levels. Besides his parents, the Rev. Michael Charles Adam and Martha Godding Adam, Mr. Adam was predeceased by his brother, Robert of Smyrna Tennessee. Survivors: His loving wife of 60 years, Millicent Ring Adam; his daughter, Bronwyn Adam of Syracuse; his son, Shawn Adam, and wife, Mary Case Adam of LaFayette; four grandchildren, Wallis and Emily Patulski and Wesley and Hillary Adam; and two nieces and a nephew. Services: The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12:00 noon Saturday at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Humane Association of Central New York, 4915 1/2 W. Taft Road, Liverpool, New York 13088.
