Birth: Aug. 13, 1852
Devon, England
Death: Jul. 13, 1900
Shandong, China

Fleet Surgeon THOMAS MARTYN SIBBALD, RN, served aboard the British Flagship HMS Centurion during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900. He was killed in naval battle at Taku Forts, Tianjin Municipality, Tanggu District, China. His body was interred at Weihai Garrison on Liugong Island, Shandong Province

A plaque was erected in his memory by his family at The Church of Saint George the Martyr, Sutton (Sibbald Point), Georgina Township, York Region, Ontario, Canada

Historial notes:
Between 1898 and 1930, the British leased a port territory in Shandong Province which was known as Weihaiwei or the Weihai Garrison; during this time, the town itself was known as Port Edward and served as the capital of Weihaiwei. During the Cultural Revolution, the cemetery at Weihai Naval Garrison was destroyed, as were almost all cemeteries in the People's Republic of China, except those in and around Hong Kong. Little or no trace of the garrison burial ground exists in modern times
