Chief of the Shanghai Fire Brigade. Masonic District Grand Master. Traveled to the Far East in 1861, and moved to Shanghai in 1864. At the time of his death was one of the longest living foreigners in Shanghai.


. . . The District Grand Lodge was then adjourned and the brethren procceeded to the Hebrew Cemetery at the corner of Mohawk and Bubbling Well Roads, where they formed into line to await the funeral procession, which arrived a few minutes later headed by the Town Band. The coffin, draped with the Municipal Flag, was conveyed to the cemetery upon a ladder truck, by the Fire Brigade, escorted by mounted Sikh Police. Then followed the Members of the Fire Brigade and the Police Force. The procession with private carriages was nearly two miles long. The following Past Masters were Pall-bearers. W. C. Murray, J. Lowrie, H. W. Cave, J. W. Gande, C. E. Pear- son, C. Amner, W. P. Bentley. J. C. Hanson, A. M. A. Evans and'J. H. Osborne, The order of the procession was District Grand Lodge of Northern China, Tuscan Lodge, E.C. Royal Sussex Lodge, E.C. Northern Lodge, E.C. Lodge Cosmopolitan, S.C. Ancient Landmark Lodge, Massachusetts Constitution, Lodge Germania, G.C. Orient Mark Lodge, E.C. Saltoun Lodge, S.C. At the conclusion of the funeral service at the grave, the breth- ren returned to the Masonic Hall, and the District Grand Lodge was closed at 6.15 p.m.
