Dr. Herbert F. Johnson, 80, of Woodbury died Monday in Cooper Medical Center, Camden, where he served as chief of staff of obstetrics before his retirement in 1972.
Dr. Johnson was a principal member of the medical group Johnson, Hughes & Gaines, which had offices in Camden and Barrington and specialized in obstetrics and gynecology.
Born in Centralia, Wash., he was a graduate of the University of Washington. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1936. He served his internship and obstetrics and gynecology residence at Cooper Hospital.
During World War II, he served in the South Pacific for the U.S. Navy as lieutenant commander.
He was a member of the New Jersey Obstetrics Society, the American College of Surgeons, the state Board of Maternal Welfare, the Medical Society of New Jersey, the Camden County Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
He was a diplomat for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and was the former medical director of the family planning clinic of Gloucester County.
He served as a member of the adjunct staff for both Jefferson Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia.
Dr. Johnson was a Woodbury resident for the past 45 years.
He was a volunteer at St. John of God in Westville Grove.
Surviving are his wife, Inez D.; a son, Herbert F. II of Pitman; two daughters, Marilynn Barre of Westfield and Joanne at home; and four grandchildren.
