My husband found Loki at the foot of stairs in the backyard when Loki was only about three-weeks-old. The tiny kitten was cold and close to death. Apparently, Loki's mother, a neighborhood feral cat, was in the process of moving her litter and had dropped the precious bundle. Our dogs probably scared her away.

My husband brought the part Russian Blue kitten in, and I cared for it around the clock. We bought him a lot of toys and took pleasure in playing with him and watching him grow.

He thrived and grew into a beautiful cat with a sleek, gray coat and greenish gold eyes. He had a unique personality, was fascinated with the world around him and eager to explore everything in his path. He greeted everything with wonder the way a child would.

We had no idea that his life would be so short.

He got outside sometime tonight and his adventures took him down the wooded alley. For whatever reason, he decided to cross Messanie, a busy street, and got ran over at around 10:00 PM.

My husband went to the store and saw a dead cat lying in the middle of the street. At first, we had a difficult time identifying him as there are so many Russian Blue ferals in the neighborhood, but it became clear that this was our Loki whom we'd raised and loved.

Tonight, we're sad. We'll miss this unique cat who had a beautiful, uplifting personality. But we take comfort in knowing that by rescuing him, we gave him two wonderful years to live and explore this world, which he thought was so fascinating and beautiful.

We will bury him in the yard with the many other cats we've lost through the years.
