Stephen Landreth Funeral Services Held Monday

Funeral services for Stephen Albert Landreth age 85, a long time resident and business man of Marceline, were held May 7 at the McLaughlin Chapel at 2:00 pm under the direction of the McLaughlin Funeral Home and conducted by the Rev. Harry Rigsby.

Stephen A. Landreth the son of Rush F. and Arena Lineberry Landreth was born October 29, 1876 on a farm near Marceline and died May 5th at the St. Francis Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Landreth and Della M. Sights were married April 8, 1900. They were the parents of three children, who survice. Mrs. Retha Fries, Madison, Wisconsin, Mrs. Omabelle Barnes, Lovington, New Mexico and Ben Landreth.

Mr. Landreth, in partnership with his brother Joe, and his father, operated the Landreth Coal Mine and later the Chariton Coal Mine and the Landreth Coal Company. He was one of the pioneer businessmen and settlers of Marceline, having been here before the railroad went through. He was active in his business until about three weeks ago, when due to his age and failing health he retired.

Members of the Methodist Church under the direction of Mrs. Ed Wampler, sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Down the Valley". Mr Landreth joined the Methodist Church at an early age.

Pallbearers were John Newman, Gifford Newman, Nelson Landreth, Sherman Logue, Lafe Logue, and Tom Lineberry. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Mr. Landreth is survived by his children, a sister, Mrs. Luvenia Newman, a brother, Enoch Landreth, two grandchildren, Mrs. Mary Celene Morrison, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, and Mrs. Suzanne Liebetrau, of Colby, Wisconsin; a great grandchild, Stephanie Ann Morrison, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Harry and Joe and two sisters, Elsie Logue and Becky Long.
