In 1863, at age sixteen, Robert W. Landreth enlisted in 1863 in Company G, 22d Virginia Cavalry, John McCausland's Brigade.
No one living today seems to know the exact length of Robert's military service but his six children who survived him claimed he served for sixteen months, which was until the close of the War.
Robert was a participant in thirteen battles, among them Cloyd farm (9 May 1864, see below), Monocacy Junction (9 July 1864), Cumberland City, Moorefield (7 August 1864), Winchester (19 September 1864), Fishers Hill (22 September 1864), and Gordonsville. Robert was born in Austinville and his parents died when he was about nine years old.
He was sent to live with his Uncle Benjamin Landreth in Anderson Bottoms, now Galax, Va.
He served on the school board of Speedwell District for 40 years and served to elected terms as Speedwell District Supt.
He worked hard for better schools and roads.
Later in life the local townspeople affectionately called Robert Landreth, Mr. Bob.
When Bob died at his home at age 91 he was one of three remaining Wythe county Confederate Veterans.
Funeral services were held at the Fleming church at three o'clock on Tuesday, June 27, with Reverend E. D. Smith officiating.
