United States Marine. He served in the United States Marine Corps, and was killed in Beruit, Lebanon, on a peacekeeping mission when the US Marine Corp Barracks was destroyed by a terrorist suicide bomber in October 1983. 221 Marines were killed in the blast.

Services to be Wednesday for Beirut victim Thomas Stowe
SOMERVILLE – Services will be held Wednesday for Marine Cpl. Thomas D. Stowe, 20, of Somerville, who died Oct. 23 when terrorists bombed the headquarters of U.S. forces in Beirut, Lebanon.
Born in Albany, N.Y., he resided there six months before moving to Somerville, where he resided for most of his life. He was a 1981 graduate of Somerville High School, where he was a member of the band and the fencing team. Stowe enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1981. Before being sent to Lebanon in May 1983, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, N.C. Stowe was wounded in September in Beirut when he was struck by fragments of a mortar shell in the neck. He returned to duty that month after being awarded a Purple Heart. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Somerville, where his father serves as rector. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. John's followed by burial at New Cemetery, Somerville. Arrangements are by Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home, West End Avenue, Somerville.
