Jules Rene was born on October 31, 1876 to Louis-Auguste Duval and Elisabeth (Elise) Birong in Luxembourgville, Duchy of Luxembourg. He was the oldest of three children. Francoise "Frankie" was born in 1877 and Juliette in 1885. His father died of peritonitis when Jules was 11 years old. While his mother tried to regroup, he was sent off to live with others.
In 1893 with the urging of friends and family, she came to the U.S. with Rene, age 16, Francoise, age 15, and Juliette age 9. They went to Tonowanda, New York. She worked as a governess and Rene worked in a factory.
By 1909 he had returned to France and married. He brought his young family to the U.S. to live with his mother in New York.
With his first wife, Marguerite, he had two children, Elise and August Robert.
He met Blanche Duval in 1920 who had come to the U.S. from France after World War I. They married in Savannah, Georgia. With Blanche, he had two children, Suzanne and Annette.
He loved to write and sing and draw caricatures. All of his children also appear to enjoy doing one or the other or all. He collected stamps and was my inspiration to do the same.
His mother died in 1920. Juliette married an American named Oswald Whyte--she died in 1955. Francoise married William Carnochan in 1895--they had a child: Andre August Carnochan; she later married a man named Frank diBartolo from New York, but Rene/Grandpa lost touch with her. She died around 1951. I am sorry to say I never had the opportunity to meet any of them although Grandpa did talk about them. He had a special place in his heart for his Mom.
