S1C, USS SERPENS WORLD WAR II

Seaman First Class Lambert was one of 198 U.S. Navy and 57 Army personnel killed when the Coast Guard liberty ship U.S.S. Serpens (AK-97) exploded while anchored at Laguna Beach, Solomon Islands, January 29, 1945. The ship was being loaded with depth charges into the hold when the explosion occurred. There were only two survivors. The cause was not determined, and it remains the largest single loss in Coast Guard history.
