Adam Barttelot
Birth: 1046
Death: 1100
West Sussex, England

Adam of Lisieux,France came to England with King William in 1066. He was given one-half of Stopham. Guy de Brionne was given the other half.
Adam may not have been his given name as Burke and others have claimed. Peter Bartlett noted that the given name is unknown. But "Adam" did have sons, Robert and Ralph.
There are records of both sons in Domesday.

Norman surnaming protocal did not allow a son to use the surname of the father during his lifetime. While the father lived, the oldest son could use his mother's surname or the name of their chief domain.Eventually, the older son succeded to his father's surname.
A younger son rarely suceeded.A younger son could use Fitz with his father's given name.Usually, a younger son used the name of the chief domain.

Roger de Montgomery of Lisieux, powerful Seinior, related to King William's family, held large domains in Normandy. He was rewarded with English lordships and was appointed head of King William's governing council and was sent back to Normandy. Roger had five sons. Robert, the oldest and heir, stayed in Normandy and succeded his father in 1096 becoming Robert de Montgomery. His early life, he was known as Count Alencon, Seignior de Belesme, his mother's surname. Roger's second son, Hugh, acquired his father's domain in England and became the Earl of Arundel.(neighbor to Adam on the River Arun) Because the grant was his father's, he was known as Earl Roger and may have used the surname Montgomery II.
Maud Matilda, Roger's daughter, married Robert, Count Mortain, Earl of Cornwall.
