James Gaston

James Gaston was born on July 24, 1761 in Kershaw, Lancaster County, South Carolina;

The son of Robert and Margaret (Logan) Gaston.

He enlisted in the South Carolina Militia Third Regiment on his fifteenth birthday 24 July 1776, where he served under Capt. John Marshall and Col. Joseph Kershaw. After the fall of Charleston in 1780, he served under Col. Brandon.

James Gaston was captured at the battle of Hanging Rock in August 1780 and was held for two month-nineteen days in the Camden District jail. He was paroled, then re-enlisted under Capt. William Ingram and Capt. Nisbet, serving until May, 1781.

James married Catherine Creighton, daughter of Thomas and Jenny Creighton, on March 19, 1783 in Kershaw, South Carolina. This union produced seven children. Around 1809, James and Catherine emigrated west to Indiana and then over to Wayne County, Illinois.

James Gaston died on March 7, 1840 in Fairfield, Illinois. It is believed that he was the first person to be buried in Bovee (Bestow) cemetery in Geff township, Illinois. He is buried along side his wife, Catherine.
