He was the second generation in his family to have been born in America, his grandparents, John and Barbara Graber, and great-grandparents, John and Catherine Graber, having immigrated to America in 1832 aboard the ship Eugene. His family came to live in Jefferson Co., Iowa in about 1843.
On the 27 February 1893 he married Iva Mae McKeehan (1879-1950) in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa.
Kit and Iva were the parents of eleven children that lived to adulthood: Franklin Herbert Graber (1895-1970), Velma May Graber (1898-1967), Nellie May Graber (1900-1925), Katharine Amanda Graber (1906-1993), Joseph Carson Graber (1910-1955), Kermit Custer Graber (1911-1987), Gail Woodrow Graber (1913-1996), Noel Dwight Graber (1915-1989), Irma Evelyn Graber (1916-2006), Willard Pershing Graber (1918-1988), and Gordon Ladd Graber (1921-1988).
Kit served in the Spanish-American War in the cavalry and rose to the rank of Corporal. He served in the 3rd U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, under the command of Col. Grigsby.
