Robert Felder Layfield, Sr. was the third child of Ed and Susie Clyde Blythe Layfield. He enjoyed the simple things in life, puttering around in his workshop, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and watching the Atlanta Braves.
He met his wife in 1934 and they dated four years before marrying in 1938. They have four children.
In 1945 Felder was drafted and served in the army for a short time. Felder always worked in the retail business. During the 1940s, he ran a small grocery store in the neighborhood where he and his family lived on Sixth Street in downtown Columbus, Georgia. When he closed this store, he went to work as a furniture salesman. He worked in several stores in the Columbus area from the late 1940s to the mid 1980s and sold furniture for Rothchilds, Maxwell Brothers and Rhodes Furniture.
After retiring from furniture sales, he worked for a while at Lewis Jones Grocery store. He and his wife enjoyed traveling with a seniors group until their health forced them to stop doing so.
Felder was diagnosed with alzheimers several years before he passed away.
