What can I say about Carl? He and his wife opened their homes and hearts to me and were very much my second parents. He was funny, with a dry sense of humor. He made me laugh. A lot. He was debonair and stylish and had a badboy grin that turned a lot of heads.
Carl was a Captain in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was the Managing director of retail marketing for Federal Express and a published author. He also loved his cats, travel, good food and wine and his family.
Carl was one of those bright lights that was taken from us too soon by cancer. I miss you Carl.

Carl Robert Williams Jr. joined FedEx in 1972, employee No. 189, a year after the company was founded in Little Rock.
He found his niche in marketing and was a key player in developing the original "Courier Pak" and introducing the "Overnight Letter."
Mr. Williams, of Memphis, managing director of retail marketing for FedEx, died of cancer Thursday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.
He was 56.
Mr. Williams was described as a focused man, quiet and unassuming with a good sense of humor.
He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas and a former captain in the Army.
His wife Saundra remembered how her husband took a risk and joined the upstart FedEx with no idea it would be such a huge success.
"He said, 'Sometimes you have to take a chance, and this one sounds good.' It's been a ride ever since," she said.
Mr. Williams was involved in the expansion of the business into domestic markets and later worked in Paris where the European market was growing.
Colleagues said Mr. Williams loved introducing products and starting new ventures.
He was also a good teacher to those making their way up in the business.
"He was a wonderful mentor who gave you the tools you needed to get the job done," Winterburn said.
Mr. Williams also leaves his mother, Margaret Williams Tobias of Memphis; a stepsister, Anne Marie Tobias of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and two stepbrothers, William M. Tobias Jr. and James Tobias, both of Spartanburg, S.C.
Memorial services will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel.
