Val graduated from BYU and began teaching high school in Duchesne and then taught elementary school in Logan. Val moved to California in 1958, where she taught for 31 years in the Atwater Elementary School District, teaching several years at the elementary level but primarily teaching at the junior high school. She was an avid reader and shared her love of reading with all she came in contact with. Traveling was another love of Val's and she visited many countries over the years. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings during her life, her favorite as a youth leader in the Young Women's Program.
Survivors include her four children; Vicki (Rick) Beckham of Merced, Calif, Vaun (Ann) Beal of Dublin, Calif., Robin (Ron) McCombs of Puyallup, Wash., and Evan Beal of Midway. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers, and two sisters: Leland Preece of Nibley, Barbara Barrus of Provo, Adoree Bingham of Walla Walla, Wash., Stuart Preece of Layton.
Funeral services will be held August 19 at 10 a.m. in the Pleasant View 3rd Ward Chapel, 650 Stadium Ave. in Provo. Interment will take place in the American Fork City Cemetery. Services under the direction of Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home of Orem. Donations in memory of Val can be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund in care of Bishop Spencer Magelby, 2025 North Stadium Lane, Provo UT 84602.
