From the "North Platte Telegraph", Aug. 14, 2001:
"Roland Frederick 'Fred' Spurrier, 75, of North Platte died Aug. 13, 2001 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
He was born Feb. 14, 1926, to Roy Richard and Lydia Marie Scharmann Spurrier in Lincoln County, where he was raised. When he was 16, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served from Feb. 22, 1943 to Nov. 24, 1945. After his discharge, he went to New York for a short time before returning to North Platte to finish his school.
He enrolled in the University of Wyoming at Laramie, Wyo. He later returned to North Platte to drive a Coca-Cola truck before hiring on with Union Pacific Railroad in 1950. He served as a switchman, then became a yardmaster and later a brakeman. He retired in 1990.
On Dec. 18, 1950, he married Millicent 'Millie' Ann Weinberger at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North PLatte.
Mr. Spurrier was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was a professor in the Cursillo Movement for many years. He was a member of P.R. Halligan American Legion Post 163, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504, Moose Lodge 551 and Eagles Aerie 2839. He was a past member of the Kights of Columbus and BPO Elks 985. He enjoyed fishing, camping with the Rolling Platters and Big Red football.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Spurrier of Bethesda, Md.; two sons, Ken (Kathy) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Richard Spurrier of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Kara, Beth and Kelsee, all of Cheyenne, and Anna and Jacob of Vancouver.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Gertrude Rosendale, Louise Lind and Margaret Kerdus; and three brothers, Richard, William, and Donald Spurrier.
A memorial has been established to the North Platte Catholic School Endowment.
Rosary will be at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski, Jr. as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery."
