GOESSEL -- Alvin Duerksen, 88, of Goessel, died today (Sept. 27, 1999) at Bethesda Home in Goessel.
He was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Marion County to Gerhard and Maria (Woelk) Duerksen.
He worked on the family farm until he was 21, after which he followed various harvest crews cutting wheat or picking fruit. He also was a gold prospector. As a conscientious objector during World War II he worked from 9-3-1942 to 11-22-1945 in Civilian Public Service in Colorado Springs, LaPine, Ore., and Three Rivers, Calif. After the war he worked as an upholsterer at a furniture factory in California until his retirement in the mid -1970s, when he moved to Newton.
He sewed 80 comforters for the Economy Shop in Newton and did volunteer work. He moved to Goessel in 1993.
He is survived by nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services were Wednesday at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church in rural Goessel with the Revs. James Dunn and Mark Wiens officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Bethesda Home in care of the funeral home.
