Frank B. Roach, 42, sheriff of Laramie county, and Nels Nelson, 25, a ranchhand of Granite Canon, were murdered at 3:15 o'clock this morning at the ranch of Alexander Webster, 33 miles southwest of Cheyenne, by two horse thieves who are believed to be Clyde B. Pearson of Cheyenne and Peter Burns of Oklahoma. These two men were arrested ten miles from the scene of the tragedy with Roach's rifle and Nelson's revolver in their possession, and now are in jail at Fort Collins. They will not be brought to Cheyenne, the murder having been committed in Colorado, but will be tried at Fort Collins.
A suspicion that a third man may have been implicated in the killing, or in the theft of horses from Hans Neilsen’s ranch which preceded it, is being investigated by Undersheriff Orin Babbit, who is in command of the sheriffs office here.
Sheriff Roach was 42 years of age. He was born in Sussex county, Delaware on March 12, 1874. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Roach. He was educated in the public schools of Sussex county and came to Wyoming in 1894. From 1894 to 1909, he rode the range in southeastern Wyoming, and from 1902 to 1905 he was foreman of the Swan Land & Cattle company of Chugwater.
He was cattle inspector for the state in 1909, and from September 1909 to February 1910 he was cattle inspector for the United States government.
During 1910 and until 1911 he served as undersheriff for Laramie county under Sheriff Lewellen Hughes. In January 1911, upon the death of Sheriff Hughes, Roach became sheriff of Laramie county. His work as sheriff was highly efficient and with the expiration of his appointed term in 1913, he was elected sheriff by a substantial majority. He was a member of Cheyenne Lodge No. 660, B.P.O.E., and the local camp of the Woodmen of the World.
Mrs. Roach's maiden name was McNab. She is the daughter of a Scotch banker who is a stockholder in the Swan Land & Cattle company, the "Two-bar" outfit, and it was while she was visiting the ranch headquarters, during a trip of inspection by her father, that she became acquainted with the splendid young foreman who was to be her husband. They were married about two years ago, Miss McNab coming from Scotland for the ceremony. Their son was born two weeks ago last Saturday.
