Joseph, born on May 31, 1826, in New York State, was the son of Robert and Eleanor Huff Gibbs, originally of England. On September 6, 1855, in New York, Joseph married Emily Clements who was born in New York in 1836 and passed away on September 26, 1925.

By the mid-1860s Joseph owned 200 acres of farmland in Section 12 of Crockery and Section 18 of Polkton Townships. Joseph died on February 24, 1909. He and Mary were buried at Nunica Cemetery.

Their children were Eugene, born in 1855 in New York; Alice, born in 1859 in New York; Hannah, born in 1861 in New York; Rebecca, born in 1863 in New York; Margaret, born in Michigan about 1865; Gershom, who was born in Michigan in 1868 and married Sarah Hamilton on July 14, 1891, in Grand Haven; George, born in 1872 in Michigan; and
Orange, was born in 1874 in Michigan.
