JAMES MONROE SELF
---James Monroe Self was born in Barren County, Kentucky, March 29, 1843 and died at his home in La Plata, Missouri, March 30, 1912, aged sixty-nine years and one day.
---He was married to Sarah E. Owen, who survives him, January 16, 1867, and to this union were born nine children, six of whom survive; Mrs. S.E. Martin, W.W. Self and J.M. Self, Jr., all of La Plata, and Mrs. Sarah A. Flickenger, Garrison, Iowa, Virgil A. Self, Vinton, Iowa and Mrs. Nora M. Clites of Correctionville, Iowa. All his children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Flickenger and Mrs. Clites. They too, in spirit, were with the loved ones beside the grave. Besides the children and wife, he leaves three brothers, one sister and countless friends to mourn his loss.
---In 1866 he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church south, and his has been a most beautiful Christian life. He was a zealous church worker and his home was ever open to the minister.
---His funeral was conducted from the Methodist Episcopal Church South, the church where he has belonged since he came to Missouri. On account of the sickness in the home of the pastor, and his inability to be there, Rev. T.S. Matthews of the Presbyterian Church conducted the funeral and his remains were laid to rest in the La Plata cemetery.
