In loving memory of my 'strange little kitty',
a.k.a. 'VESTER

I adopted Sylvester from the Humane Society in The Dalles. I have a soft spot for long haired black cats, and he happened to remind me a bit of another pet that I had, Babetta. The only difference is he only had 1/2 a tail and what he did have was bent at the tip.
My friends loved that cat. They thought him strange and called him the 'Pyro-Kitty'. We could not leave burning candles anywhere unattended. If I were by myself & had to leave the room I would have to make sure any candles that may have been burning were out first. He had a habit of putting his paws in the flame, 1 at a time, until it caught on fire. After his fur would ignite that darn cat would shake the fire out and lick the burnt fur. He would continue doing this until there was no fur tufts left between his toes and then would switch to the other paw. I have never seen this before. He also liked to run through the house at full speed from one end to the other, sometimes ramming himself straight into the wall. Honestly, I never did anything to this cat to make him like that. He came this way!
Needless to say, he was definitely a unique cat & I have never had one like him since. Sylvester died on Christmas Eve morning. There were times that he would stay out all night, it was not unusual. This particular morning he did not come home. We found him floating in the next door neighbors swimming pool, frozen solid. They had never drained their pool prior to the winter setting in, it was 1/2 full. Sylvester had somehow fallen in and could not get out. I cried and cried that morning. It was the worst Christmas that I can remember up to this point.
I think about Sylvester from time to time, daily activities keep me busy. Yet it seems that when I am not thinking of him is when I think that I see him out of the corner of my eye...Just a glimpse, running through the house...
