After the death of her husband in 1869, Willemijntje left the Netherlands in 1875 aboard the S.S. P. Caland departing from Rotterdam. She is recorded in the database of Castle Garden as arriving in New York on March 30. Included with her are six children: Teunis, Jan B., Jan, Hanneke, Gerrit and Albert. Her son Rik, age 18, arrived in America one year earlier, on February 19, 1874, aboard the S.S. Maas. The 1880 US Census records the entire family living in Black Oak Township, Mahaska County, Iowa.
Gerrit Barten Van Heukelom was born on December 6, 1820 to Teunis Barten Van Heukelum and Jantje Janssen in the Municipality of Renkum, Gelderland Province, the Netherlands. He is the first of nine children. He married Willemijntje Beker on March 2, 1850 in the Municipality of Ede, Gelderland. Gerrit was a farmer by trade. He died on May 22, 1869 in Renkum at the age of 48.
