NEW CARLISLE - Mary Elizabeth (Carr) Clendenen passed peacefully to her rest surrounded by love at Hamilton Grove on February 4, 2013.
She was born to Joseph F. Carr and Vanvelia Elizabeth (Webster) Carr on May 25, 1913, in New Carlisle, and had remained a lifelong resident. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; a son, Philip; a granddaughter, Kourtney J. Fisher; three sisters, Rachel, Naomi (Hock) and Ruth (Robinson); and two brothers, Webster and George Carr. Mary graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1931 and married Lowell Clendenen on October 5, 1932. Together they owned several businesses and a farm. Mary is survived by two daughters, Judith Clendenen (Fisher) of Los Alamos, N.M., and Marcia Clendenen (Richard Riley) of Staten Island, N.Y.; one son, Bruce (Vicki) of Stillwater, MN; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom was cherished by her. She is also survived by numerous loving nephews and nieces . In addition to being a farm wife, Mary worked at Watson's Collectibles as a bookkeeper. This afforded her an opportunity to travel with the Collectibles Club to China, Germany, England, Australia and New Zealand. She also traveled with her family to Alaska, Hawaii, and throughout Europe. Mary was a charter member of the Home Extension Club in New Carlisle for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron. She was a member of the Hamilton Church. She was an enthusiastic supporter of Historic New Carlisle and the Old Republic. She served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and took an avid interest in the welfare of her hometown and its people. In addition to gardening, Mary enjoyed reading and watching basketball. She devoted her life to serving others with optimism and cheer. She made friends of all ages and will be missed by them all.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held in the spring.

Burial will take place at Hamilton Church, New Carlisle.
