"Notes: John W. Johnson. Word has been received of the death of John W. Johnson, 24, whose family lived in the Cleveland area from 1952 to 1970. Mr. Johnson, a guard at the Federal Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kans., was stabbed to death by an inmate Sept. 29. He is survived by his wife Patricia; daughter Julie Ann; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Preiss of Benne Terre, Mo.; brothers John, Pete and Brian, and a sister, Mrs. Polly Hartman. Services were in Leavenworth."

Officer Johnson was stabbed to death at the United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas. While locking up inmates for the night at 2100 hours one of the men struck him with a large piece of strap steel, knocking him to the ground. When another officer came to his aid the inmate stabbed him.

Circumstances of Death:
Corrections Officer John W. Johnson was fatally stabbed by an inmate on September 29, 1974 while working on the third tier of "B" cellhouse at the United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth. While locking down the cellhouse for the night inmate Willie Adams struck Officer Johnson with a large piece of strap steel, knocking him to the ground. When another officer came to his aid, inmate Adams, also known as "Gypsy" Adams stabbed the second officer. The inmate then stabbed Officer Johnson 117 times. Inmate Adams committed suicide almost a year later while awaiting sentencing in the case. Officer Johnson was 24 years old at the time of his death and had worked at the penitentiary for eight months. He was survived by his wife Debbie, and a daughter
