Indiana County officially came into existance in 1803 and before that the southern part of the modern day Indiana county had been part of Westmoreland County since 1773. The progression of counties this area belonged to, is as follows: After 1750 and before 1770 it was part of Cumberland County; in 1771 it became part of Bedford County which was carved out of Cumberland. In 1773, Bedford was split in two and this are became part of Westmoreland county and it remained with this county until the reorganization of 1800 and finally became Indiana County, in 1803. Basically, Indiana county north of here was either unorganized territiory or part of the larger Northumberland County until 1803. (Draw a line, west to east, from Sagamore, thru Arcadia and south was Westmoreland and north was Northumberland.)
