Edward Joseph Hanzel was born Oct. 6, 1915, at Le Sueur, Minnesota. His father, John Hanzel, was a farmer and his mother, Sophie Rynda Hanzel, a homemaker.
The son enlisted in the Navy on Sept. 10, 1935. The 1940 Census showed his permanent residence in Long Beach, California, where he lived with his wife, Lydia.
Mr. Hanzel was a watertender first class on the U.S.S. Arizona when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. His body was one of the few recovered from the crew of the Arizona and is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
