He was born about 1844 in Scott County, Kentucky. On September 9, 1864, he enlisted in Company E at Camp Nelson, Kentucky.
He and other men from his unit were escorting a Union Army cattle drive when they were ambushed and massacred by Confederate guerrillas outside of Simpsonville, Kentucky.
He went from slavery directly into the war against slavery. Per his service records, he was owned by Richard H. Haggard of Scott County at the time of his enlistment. In 1867, Richard Haggard filed a claim with the federal government asking for compensation for the loss of his slave.
