Joshua H. Legg(e) was born in Canada West (Ontario)in what was then Johnstown District on November 11, 1836. He is the 2nd son born to Ambrose and Elizabeth Legge. The "H" in his name could be his mother's maiden name "Howland" the practice was common back then. He immigrated with the entire family in the late 1840s to Boone, Illinois. His parents remained there at least 10 years as their children slowly left home and moved west into Iowa. At age 20, Joshua left home in Boone, IL and moved in 1856 to Clay, Washington, Iowa. A year later he married Mary Ann Dillon. His younger brother Otis and Joshua where close and Otis even lived with Joshua and Mary Ann for a few years before Otis enlisted in the Union Army. It is not clear if Joshua had much contact with other family members though they were all in the area. Somehow, it appears that Joshua did not participate in the Civil War as his brothers, Otis, Ambrose Jr., Thomas, Samuel, and even his father Ambrose Sr. have records showing service. Joshua and Mary Ann had 3 daughters and 2 sons. Joshua and Mary Ann stayed in the general area of Keokuk and Washington Counties until their deaths.
