Ivan was born in Delnice, Croatia, the son of Marko Gasparac (1856-1940) and Marija nee Majnaric (1861-1908). He emigrated to the U.S. in 1901. He returned to Delnice and married Katarina Racki there on April 17, 1907, subsequently returning to the U.S. He worked as a coal miner in Roslyn, WA, living with his family in Ronald. He was committed to Eastern State Hospital in 1913. He was the father of three. Following his wife's death in 1914, the two surviving children were adopted.
