Daisy Bonnafon, 71, was born on December 9, 1939 in Kentucky to Ellis W. Meriwether and Laura Bell (Killebrew) Meriwether. "I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me and heard my cry" Psalm 40:1. Daisy departed this life early Sunday morning, August 7, 2011 at 4:10 a.m.
Daisy graduated from Kokomo High School in 1957. She was the first black woman hired at the Howard County Clerk's Office where she was employed for 16 years. She also was the first black woman employed at Indiana University, Kokomo. Daisy finished her employment with Delco/Delphi after 24 years of service.
Daisy was a faithful member of Second Missionary Baptist Church. Her life was a living testimony of her faith and love for her savior Jesus Christ. She was active with the Sr. Usher Board, Pastor Aide Committee and as an Advisor. She was a faithful Sunday School and Bible Study member and had a special love and bond with her Lydia Circle.
Her love of children was also displayed by overseeing the church nursery. She was active in her community volunteering at the Carver Center lunch program. She loved traveling and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She invested so much time in her grandchildren guiding and helping rear them with patience and love.
Daisy is survived by three children, born a son to her first union Juan Dino (Gina) Fears, Indianapolis to Johnny Fears (deceased). Two daughters, Marisa Bonnafon and Michelle (Melvin) McNeil from her second union to Lawrence Bonnafon all of Kokomo. Sister, Dorothy (William) Stevenson, Edna Meriwether, both of Kokomo; April Meriwether (Eric), Indianapolis; Elaine Meriwether, Kokomo; Darlene Nevels, Texas and Carletta Rogers, Alabama. Brothers, Joe Earl Meriwether (Maria Livingston), Myrtle Beach, SC and Ellis Meriwether, Jr, Kokomo. Grandchildren, Monicia Fears, Jennifer Fears, Brittney Jones, Michael Bonnafon, Juan Fears, Nia Bonnafon-Mosley, Brielle Bonnafon, Tiara Bonnafon, Denna (Tyrone) Evans, Kasey and Kelly Rucker. Great-grandchildren, Bria Walker, Jaden, Joshua, Jamal, and Jasmine Smith all of Kokomo. Robert McIntire, Kaleigh, Johara, and Tasha Evans, all of Arizona; Kameron Bush, Kamar, Kamiyah, Brooke, and Bria Westmoreland; Jesse Anders, JaJuan and Jayanna Anderson all of Indianapollis. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends. Daisy was preceded in death by her parents Laura Meriwether and Ellis Meriwether, Sr. In Daisy own words, "FAITH, God has been good to me! His Mercy and Grace has brought me through."
Special thanks to Jackie Orndorff, RN, who helped care for our mother at home. Her two grandchildren Monicia Fears and Michael Bonnafon for their countless days and weekends caring for Mommy. Southern Care Hospice Team employees Nona Bell, BSN, and Sarah Seele, Aide.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011, 11 A.M. at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 818 Apperson Way North, Kokomo.
