Birth: Feb. 11, 1857
Fairfield County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Jan. 25, 1929
Troup County
Georgia, USA

Hiram Fairfield Coleman was the son of David Roe Coleman and Nancy Elizabeth Coleman. They were married in Fairfield Co., SC, and named their son Hiram after his maternal grandfather Hiram Henry Coleman and the county of his birth. The obit of Hiram says he was brought to Chambers County at the age of two years. His brother Edward Wilson Coleman moved from Chambers Co., AL, to SC after the death of his first wife, Lola Marsh. Edward's second wife was Jennie Isabel Coleman, who was the Coleman family historian in Fairfield Co., SC. When the late Gov. of MS, J. P. Coleman decided to trace his ancestors, he discovered the diaries left by Jennie with her sister, and included them in his book entitled, "The Robert Coleman Family, from VA to TX." The text of this book is online for anyone interested in learning more about the ancestors of Hiram Fairfield Coleman. It is not known where Hiram's parents David and Nancy are buried in Chambers County, but they appeared on the census in Hickory Flats. They came to Chambers County with David's mother, Nancy Elam Coleman, after the death of her husband, Wiley Fitz Coleman in Chester Co., SC. Hiram's sister Lizzie Coleman married Winston W. Gay and their family is buried at Fredonia Methodist Church in Chambers Co. His brother Robert Elam Coleman, who lived in Five Points, has a son, Elam S. Coleman, and daughter-in-law Mary Ovell Coleman buried in the Stephens family plot in this cemetery. Hiram's brothers Bedford F. Coleman moved to Opelika, Lee Co., AL, and Phillip Mayo Coleman moved to Camp Hill, Tallapoosa Co., AL. Hiram's obit states that he died "in his home in Lanett (Chambers Co., AL) on Saturday;" however, his death is recorded in Troup Co., GA, on 25 Jan 1929, which was a Friday. His tombstone incorrectly shows a date of death of 28 Jan 1929, which was on a Monday.
