James (Jim) Stokes, age 73, of Coleman, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman. Burial is at the Coleman City Cemetery.

Jim Stokes was born June 17, 1936 in Coleman, Texas, the son of Cecil Stokes and Vera Bennett Stokes. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1954. He was a University of Texas graduate, receiving a B.S. degree in Pharmacy. While at UT, he was inducted into the Silver Spurs. Jim was an Eagle Scout and was a member of the Boy Scout Fraternity at UT.

Following his college graduation, he received a direct commission in the United States Air Force, serving a one year tour of duty at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls and a two year tour in Morocco. Upon completing his military service, Jim became a junior partner in Bowen Drug Store with Robert Bowen and John Warren. He became sole owner of Bowen Drug Store a few years later and operated it until its closing in 2009.

Jim served the Coleman community in many ways including the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the 4-H Club. His hobby was photography and he supported the Coleman Fine Arts League. He was a faithful member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Coleman.

Survivors include his son, Warren and wife Shelley Stokes of Deer Park, Texas; granddaughters, Bailee and Brooke Stokes; sister, Donna and husband, The Rev. Bob Baker, of Klamath Falls, Oregon; nieces and extended family; long-time friend, Bob Farley of Santa Anna.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Stokes; his mother, Vera Stokes Willingham; his daughter, Laurie Cecilia Stokes; an aunt, Era Britton; and a niece, Lynn Ann Rankin Mota.
