Birth: Jan. 10, 1988
Colorado Springs
El Paso County
Colorado, USA
Death: May 1, 2009
Kunar, Afghanistan

Sgt. James D. Pirtle, 21, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, always had a smile on his face and was a constant joker. Jokes were also played on him. One time, several of his friends duct-taped him to a tree, mainly because Jimmy said it couldn't be done. It took two rolls of tape to do it, but they did. Growing up his hairstyle changed from green spikes to a mohawk to a more traditional short style. He was determined to serve his country, and after his 2006 Globe Charter School graduation, he immediately went to basic training. Deployed to Afghanistan in June 2008, assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, he was killed when insurgents attacked his unit using direct fire near the village of Nishagam, in Konar Province, Afghanistan. He was scheduled to return home in June. A friend of Jimmy's said they hope other people understand that every soldier who dies there has a life and is an individual, "Remember they are just not another soldier, They are a funny guy who used to have green hair who lived for others and his country." His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and NATO Medal. Jimmy is survived by his mother, Patricia E. Pirtle of Colorado Springs, his father and step-mother, James and Valarie Pirtle of Colorado Springs, two sisters, Jackie Pirtle of Denver and Jennifer Bergstrom of Colorado Springs, grandparents, Dorene and John Zani of Daytona Beach, Florida, two nephews, Keenan Withers and Nathaniel Bergstrom, a niece, Tatianna Withers and his beloved furry friends, Storm, Boo, and Rudy.
