He matriculated from Richmond to VMI and stayed three years. In the Spring of 1861, he was Artillery Drillmaster at Richmond. He became a member of Anderson's Company of Virginia Light Artillery. After being often absent, sick, he was discharged for chronic rheumatism. He then was employed at Old Dominion Iron and Nail Works, while volunteering with the Second Virginia Local Defense Troops as a sergeant. He was captured at Grove Hill on 6 April 1865 and held at Point Lookout until taking the oath and being released on 23 June 1865.
