John Betterton, son of Owen and Nancy Ann (Moon) Betterton, married Amelia Ellen Barnard, daughter of Indoe and Ann (Davis) Barnard, on 11 March 1847.

John was enumerated on the 1860 census living with his parents, Owen and Ann, in Chestnut Township, Knox County, Illinois. He was a 20-year-old white male born in Ohio. There were eight other Betterton's in the household, five females (Mary, age 28; Susan, age 12; Sarah, age nine; Laura, age five; and Emma, age two) and three males (Cyrus, age 17; George R., age 17; and Josh, age 14). There was also another female, Rachel Rose, in the household.

In 1870, John's young family was living in Monroe township of Madison County, Iowa. John was a 36-year-old white male who had been born in Ohio. A farmer, he owned $2000 of real property and $200 of personal property. His wife, Ellen, was 24 years old. She had been born in New York to parents of foreign birth. Others in the household were two daughters (Elnora, age five; and Florence, age four) and a son (Charles, age one).

At the time of the 1880 census, John and his family were living in Pottawattamie County, Iowa where they were enumerated in Minden township. John was a 39-year-old white male farmer who had been born in Ohio to Virginia-born parents. Amelia was 34 years old. She had been born in New York and both of her parents had been born in England. Others in the household were three daughters (Elnora, Florence and Arrilla) and three sons (Charlie, Irvin and Frank). The two oldest children had been born in Illinois while the youngest four were born in Iowa.

In 1885, John and Amelia were enumerated in the Kansas state census in Aldine township in Norton County, Kansas. John was a 47-year-old white male farmer. His military service had been in Company D of the Illinois 7th Cavalry. Amelia was a 39-year-old white female. Also in the household were four males (Charles M., age 16; William C., age 14; Frank, age seven; and George, age four) and two females (Arilla, age ten; and Emma, age one). The family had come to Kansas from Nebraska.

On the 1895 Kansas state census, John was a farmer, then 56 years old, still living in Aldine township. He had been born in Ohio and came to Kansas from Iowa. Amelia was enumerated as 48 years old. Others in the household were Frank, George and Emma. The household enumerated just previous to John's was Elmer Betterton. Also on the same page was the household of Irvin Betterton.

On the 1900 census, John and his family were again enumerated in Norton County's Aldine township. John, a farmer, was reported to have been born during December 1840 in Ohio with his age listed as 59. His father was reported to have been born in Virginia and his mother in Ohio. Amelia had been born in New York during March 1848 to English-born parents. They had been married 36 years and eight of the nine children born to them were living. Others in the household were two sons (Frank and George) born in Iowa and a daughter (Emma) born in Nebraska. Elsewhere in the same township, John's brother George was enumerated.

In 1910, John was enumerated in the census as a 70-year-old white male born in Ohio to a father born in Virginia and a mother born in Ohio. Amelia was a New York-born 63-year-old white female whose parents were both born in England. They had been married 46 years and seven of the nine children born to them were living.

Living in the city of Norton in 1920, John was an 80-year-old white male born in Ohio to natives of that state. Amelia was a 72-year-old white female born in New York to English-born parents.

John and Amelia's nine children were: Anna Elnora, Florence Laura, Charles M. (who married Jennie Mason), William Irvin, Arilla Amelia, Frank, George, Emma and another unknown child who never appeared on a census.
