William C. Coe was the son of Horatio and Catherine (Grubb) Coe. He was educated in Virginia and gained his training as a farmer there. In 1842, William and five brothers and sisters moved to Sangamon County, Illinois after his father's death. Here he began to establish his farm and his life.
William married Elizabeth Jane Kimes on November 4, 1851 at the residence of George Withey in Mechanicsburg, Illinois. Dr. Dresser officated at the ceremony. George Withey's wife, Martha, was Elizabeth's older sister. Elizabeth was the daughter of Lewis and Sarah Short Kimes.
Like many others at that time, he went to Illinois intending to secure land and develop a community for his family. Most of the land had to be cleared of timber before it could be farmed. He became a very prominet farmer and an influential member of the Sangamon County community. He was a member of the United Brethern Church in Mechanicsburg.
William passed away at the age of 75 years, 2 months, 18 days at his farm home two miles from Mechanicsville.
