Madison Harvey Belshe along with Boyd Miller and William Greenup, outfitted an expedition to California during the gold rush days. The Belshe-Miller-Greenup expedition departed for California from Locust Mound, Missouri on 2 May 1850, and arrived in California four months later. The expedition began its return trip to Miller Co, Missouri on 1 July 1853, with everyone but Madison Harvey Belshe returning by ship. Madison returned overland, reportedly with much gold.
The Belshe Family Tree Book (1986 edition) documents Madison Harvey Belshe's date of birth as April 3, 1811. The tombstone documents it as April 11, 1811. This memorial site will keep the April 11 date since it's the one chiseled in stone.
His birth in Monticello (Wayne) Kentucky is well documented in 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 Census records of Miller county, Missouri.
