She was born March 16, 1944, in Reedsburg, the daughter of Myron and Cleo Matteson Gates. Karen was a 1961 graduate of Webb High School and a graduate of the Sauk County Teachers' College.
On Dec. 7, 1963, she was married to James E. Schiefelbein. Karen was proud to be a stay-at-home mom. She also did bookwork for Schiefelbein Body Shop. In later years, she enjoyed volunteering for several area organizations. Karen was a faithful and active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling, gardening, being around the many birds in her backyard and spending time with her family. Karen loved her home, the west side and Reedsburg; she was proud to be a lifelong resident of LaValle Street.
Survivors include her husband, Jim; four children, Christine (Paul) Falkenstein of New Berlin, Kimberly Schiefelbein of West Allis; Mark Schiefelbein of Westlake, Ohio, and Amy (Steve) Ziebell of Stoughton; two grandchildren, Amanda and Corey Falkenstein; her AFS daughter, Chris Hemeleers of Belgium; other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jim Gates; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Evan and Hilda Schiefelbein.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reedsburg, with Pastor Paul Crolius officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoof Funeral Home, Reedsburg, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
Memorials to St. Peter's Lutheran School, the Reedsburg Public Library or the Reedsburg Area Food Pantry would be appreciated.
