Wendel was most likely born in Grolsheim, Rheinland, Germany, the son of Johann Adam Bernhardt of Sankt Johann, Rheinland, Germany and Maria Veronica Faessig of Grolsheim, Rheinland, Germany. There is a Revolutionary Patriot marker on his grave.
His wife was Anna Catherine "Catherina" Ebling. Their graves were moved from Hinnershitz Cemetery to Good Shepherd and were relocated between the church and the parking lot with the other ones that were moved.
Note from Tim Gruber: "the tombstone says: Married with Catharina nee Ebelling on 26 Feb 1778 and conceived with her 4 sons and 10 daughters..."
