Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Before the Civil War he was a stage actor and bookbinder. In April 1861, he enlisted for service in the 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was appointed a 1st Lieutenant. On May 8, 1861, he was with the 11th Indiana as it moved to Evansville to help blockade the Ohio River and in June he made a raid on Romney, West Virginia, which cleared the town of Confederates. Appointed Adjutant of the 11th Infantry he took part in the battles at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and Shiloh, Tennessee. Promoted to Major in April 1862, he took part in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi and received a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in September 1862. In March 1863, he moved up to Colonel and became the 11th Indiana Infantry commander. He with his regiment was heavily engaged in General Ulysses S. Grant's Mississippi campaign, taking part in the battles at Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Big Black River Bridge, and the siege of Vicksburg. In August 1864, his 11th Indiana became active participants in General Philip Sheriadn's Shenandoah Virginia, campaign and the battle at Cedar Creek, Virginia. In October 1864, he and the 11th were sent to Baltimore where they served until War's end. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted a Brigadier Genera, US Volunteers for “gallant services at the battle of Cedar Creek”. He re-entered the service as the Colonel of the 9th United States Veteran Volunteer Infantry, in Washington, D.C., where he served until July 1866. Following his military service, he was a municipal official, hotel operator, and a United States Treasury Department clerk. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
