He married Nora E. Bishop and has two sons; Richard E. ''Dick'' Bishop, Sr., David R. Bishop, Ph.D, and one daughter; Diane E. Bishop-Boos.
He worked for the Kansas City Missouri Police Department for 30 years, from 1939
to 1969. He served in all ranks including; Commander of the Detective Division,
Uniformed Forces, and Director of Public Information and Human Relations. He was
a member of the Assocation of Retired Police Employees, and a life member of the
International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He was Army veteran of World War II and continued his military service in the
U.S. Army Reserves for 29 years, when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was
a member of the Retired Officers Association; a charter member of VFW Police
Memorial Post 9762;
a former member of the Military Order of World Wars and the Military Affairs
Committee of the Chamber of Commerce.
He served as director of the National Safety Program for the Veterans of Foreign
Wars of the U.S. for 15 years then retired in 1983. He was a long time member of
the Greater Kansas City area Safety Council, serving as a member and chairman of
the executive committee. He was a former committee chairman, Westerners
District, of the Kansas City area council Boy Scouts of America.
