John Tuttle was born in Fairfax County, Virginia, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Tuttle. After relocating to North Carolina, he enlisted in the militia and served three different periods during the Revolution. He married Anna Barbara Frye on June 16, 1783. They settled on a 175 acre farm on Town Fork Creek and started their family.

They had the following children:
