William Allen Locke:

~William Allen Locke was one of nine Lockes from Locke Valley near Shade Gap Pa. to fight in the Civil War.~

Born 6-10-1849 to Thomas and Hannah Locke.

He could not get permission from his parents to join, being only 14 years old. He sneaked out a window one night, with the help of his sisters.

He enlisted for 3 years as a private and mustered in on 4-6-1864 in Company D, 12th. Pennsylvania Cavalry. His enlistment papers show him as 18 years old with gray eyes and brown hair. (He was 14 years old.)

Military records relate that on 11-30-64, less than 8 months after enlisting, he died at Harpers Ferry, Virginia of wounds received a day earlier at Charles Town, Virginia.

He was originally buried at Harpers Ferry, Virginia but moved to the National Cemetery at Winchester, Virginia.

Four Locke soldiers are listed on the monument.
