Mary Melinda Lewis was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Denny/Denney) Lewis. She was the wife of George Cantonwine, son of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.
She married George Cantonwine May 19, 1844, in Lewis Bottom, Linn Co., Iowa. George and Mary had seven children, two of whom (David and Elza) died in infancy.
Their children were Amanda Magdalene (m. John B. Scott), David M. (died as a child in Iowa), Elza A. (died as a child in Iowa), Elizabeth Sylvania (m. William Berry King), Wesley Jacob (m. Clara E. Cram), Mary Liberty (single), Hannibal Lincoln Winfield Scott "W. S." (m. Mary E. Actor).
Their Scott grandchildren, whom George and Malinda raised after their parents' deaths in 1863, were: Henry Clay Scott and Ada Amanda Scott (m. Charles Edward Shaffer of Walla Walla).
