Death: Sep. 8, 1905

George C. Cantonwine was the son of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine. Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

George married Mary Malinda Lewis on May 9, 1844 in Linn county, Iowa. They had nine children, two of whom died in infancy and are buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Linn Co., IA. They also raised two grandchildren.

Their children were Amanda Magdalene (m. John B. Scott), David M. (died as a child in Iowa), Elza A. (died as a child in Iowa), Elizabeth Sylvania (m. William Berry King), Wesley Jacob (m. Clara E. Cram), Mary Liberty (single), Hannibal Lincoln Winfield Scott "W. S." (m. Mary E. Actor).

Their Scott grandchildren, whom George and Malinda raised after their parents' deaths in 1863, were: Henry Clay Scott and Ada Amanda Scott.

George died at the age of 84. Malinda died at age 73, approximately seven years before George's death in 1905.

George Cantonwine was my 3rd Great Grandfather. His daughter, Amanda Cantonwine, was killed by the Indian Big Foot. Amanda's daughter, Ada Amanda, was my great-grandmother and Porter Shaffer was my grandfather. Thanks for the tribute!!
