Son of Melba (Neer) Cantonwine

Jumping from the rear end of an ice wagon in the path of an automobile driven by C. A. Baldwin of Broadmoor resulted in the instant death yesterday noon of Frank Lee Cantonwine, 5-year-old son of Mrs. Mary [Melba] Cantonwine, 702 North Spruce street. In a statement issued last night by Deputy Coroner Russell Law, Mr. Baldwin Is acquitted of any blame for the unfortunate accident. Mrs. Cantonwine told Deputy Coroner Law that she could see no way in which Mr. Baldwin could be to blame. Frank Johnson, 306 West Dale street, the only eye-witness to the accident, made the same statement. No inquest will be held, according to a statement from the coroner's office last night. Mr. Johnson said the boy was playing on the back step of an El Paso Ice and Fuel company's wagon which was stopped in front of a grocery store two blocks north of the Cantonwine home, and that the boy jumped off the wagon directly in front of Mr. Baldwin's car. Mr. Baldwin, who was driving at an estimated speed of not more than 20 miles an hour, used his brakes and swerved to avoid the child. According to Johnson, the boy became confused and ran further into the car’s path. Mr. Baldwin instantly brought his car to a stop and carried the body into the Cantonwine home. The boy's chest was crushed and his right arm broken. Death was thought to have been instantaneous. The little fellow is survived by his mother and 2-year-old sister. The father died a year ago of influenza. Funeral services for the boy will be held from St. Mary’s Catholic church at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Rev. Father Godfrey Raber will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Friends may view the body at the Carrington mortuary after 10 o’clock this morning, up to the hour of the funeral.
