Royal S. "R. S." Cantonwine was one of seven children of Dr. Charles A. and Julia Ann (Denslow) Cantonwine. He was the grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.
Charles (Sr.), the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.
Royal S. Cantonwine married Clara N. Cummins, the daughter of John Milo and Jemima (Beatty) Cummins, on November 5, 1882 in Umatilla county, Oregon.
Little is know of Royal and Clara aside from an 1885 census record for Walla Walla county, Washington, which lists Royal's occupation as a blacksmith. Also, according to an 1889 Washington state and territorial census record, Royal and Clara had three children, Edward (b. abt 1884), Ella (b. abt. 1886), and an infant (no sex or age given). A similar census record for 1892 shows five children: Edmond ("Edward" of the previous census record), Ella, Leroy (b. abt 1887), Elmer (b. abt 1889), and an infant (no sex indicated - b. abt 1891 - (name was later determined to be Elbert (aka Melvin), b. Oct. 1891).
Clara later married James Howell Cooke. She died July 11, 1922 in Portland, OR and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Portland.
